A Greathead Shield used during the construction of Bank station
A couple of novel designs sit close to each other in the heart of the City. The first sits under a statue of the Victorian Civil Engineer James Greathead which is apt. Greathead was the inventor of the Greathead Shield, a protective structure used during the excavation of large tunnels. These shields were used during the construction of the London Underground system and the statue of James Greathead allows ventilation for Bank station many feet below the surface (Note the vents between the plinth and the statue).
The second vent, also serving Bank station sits just around the corner and is in the form of a Neo Classical Obelisk surmounted with the Underground Logo.
